England are heading to the World Cup with high hopes of winning it all — and many are convinced that it could finally be their year. It has been six long decades since Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy after beating West Germany at the old Wembley. In the years since, England have come agonisingly close to a second title, but it hasn't quite clicked for them.

Bobby Robson led them to the semi-finals in 1990, where West Germany got their revenge on penalties. After the turn of the millennium, the so-called Golden Generation came and went despite being widely tipped to deliver the biggest prize in football. Gareth Southgate got a rejuvenated England side to another semi-final in 2018, but Croatia went through after extra time despite the Three Lions taking the lead.

Now, under an elite manager in Thomas Tuchel, will England finally rise to the top again? Or will it be another year of heartbreak, missed opportunities, and ultimately, failure?

Their squad is undoubtedly among the strongest on paper at the whole tournament, even though the likes of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Harry Maguire have been left out.

England also breezed through qualifying without losing a single game or even conceding a goal, which suggests they could be extremely tough to beat.

However, they won't be playing the likes of Andorra and Latvia this summer. If they want to win it all, they will need to beat the very best in the business.

The group stage draw was relatively kind to the Three Lions, who will begin their campaign against Croatia before facing Ghana and Panama. If they get through unscathed, what happens after that is anybody's guess.

Spain, who overcame England in the Euros final two years ago, are widely considered the favourites to win the World Cup. They are closely followed by the likes of France, Argentina and Brazil.

England will have to face and beat at least one of those teams to bring the trophy home, which certainly won't be easy.

The blistering heat will also pose an issue for a group of players more used to rainy days and freezing winter nights. Teams like Spain and Brazil should, in theory, find it much easier to acclimatise to the conditions.

That said, football doesn't always work like that. Sometimes things can happen that defy logic and expectation, like Leicester City winning the Premier League title exactly 10 years ago.

If the Foxes can prevail against odds of 5,000/1, surely England can deliver on the world stage once again after six decades? All we can do is hope and pray that it finally happens in North America this summer.
