Manchester United are on the hunt for a new striker this summer and have been linked with Tottenham superstar Harry Kane.
Man Utd v Wrexham: Match Preview
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag appears to have his hands tied by the Glazer family when it comes to signing Tottenham star Harry Kane. The Dutchman is on the hunt for a new frontman this summer, with the Red Devils looking to battle for silverware on all fronts this season.
United secured their return to the Champions League in May after they finished third in the Premier League table. And after a promising campaign under Ten Hag last time around, there is plenty of optimism around Old Trafford.
The north west giants have already landed playmaker Mason Mount from Chelsea, as well as goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan ahead of the new season. But Ten Hag needs a proven goalscorer to put the ball in the back of the net. And Kane has been on the club’s radar for months.
United appeared to be among the frontrunners to land the England captain at the start of the summer, with some reports suggesting he was set to pen a deal at Old Trafford. But the trail went cold as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain upped their interest. And there may now be an explanation of why the Red Devils look unlikely to get a deal for Kane over the line.
According to Sky Sports, the Glazers are taking funds out of United to pay back the money they borrowed when they originally purchased the club. The money coming out has had a knock-on effect when it comes to Financial Fair Play regulations. And the Red Devils wouldn’t be able to afford to pay Kane’s transfer fee or wages.
But if the Glazer family sold up and United were taken over by a new backer, the club would be able to sanction a deal for the Premier League’s second highest goalscorer in history. So the current takeover uncertainty is likely to be immensely frustrating for Ten Hag as Kane edges towards a move away from the capital.

Kane has just one year remaining on his Tottenham contract and will be free to leave Spurs for free next summer if he doesn’t put pen-to-paper on a new deal. Bayern have moved to the front of the queue to snap up the 29-year-old during the current window. And ex-Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham has told the player not to sign fresh terms with his current employers.
“I think the worst thing that Harry Kane could do would be to sign a new contract this summer,” Sheringham told Lord Ping. “He could be in a situation where things don’t go to plan with Ange [Postecoglou] and then he’s in a cycle where he has to wait for a new manager to come in. If he goes into the season without a new deal, he can watch how everything unfolds.”
