FABIO CAPELLO will hold talks with the Football Association today and expects to pledge his long-term future to England before flying out to the World Cup on Wednesday.
The Englandcoach returned to Italy to visit his mother, Evelina, last night but will receive reassurances over his position in a telephone call from Sir Dave Richards, the chairman of Club England, as the FA seek to rebuff Inter Milan’s attempts to entice Capelloback to Serie A.
And it was believed last night that Inter are set to make an official approach to the FA today in a bid to appoint him as their manager.
Capello, who said he knows the make-up of his 23-man squad for South Africa following yesterday’s mightily unimpressive 2-1 win over Japan in Austria, has been unsettled by the untimely departure from the FA of chairman Lord Triesman. He had verbally agreed with Triesman to remove a get-out clause from his £6million-a-year contract that offered a two-week window for him to
speak to clubs after the World Cup. But the paperwork has not yet been
signed due to the behind-the-scenes upheaval.
England's Jamie Carragher Wayne Rooney and Fabio Capello during the friendly against Japan
Richards,
who is vice-chairman of the FA and chairman of the Premier League,
will now reassure Capello that they want him to stay in charge until
2012.
“The situation will be clear in two days,
once I have spoken with Sir Dave Richards,” said Capello.
“I shook hands with Lord Triesman, but now I know
nothing. Nothing was written. But if the new people feel the same way,
then yes. For sure, it’s OK.”
Inter Milan
president Massimo Moratti is prepared to treble Capello’s salary after
tax now he has identified him as the man to replace Jose Mourinho.
But Capello said: “I have not spoken with anyone at
Inter. I know nothing about this.”
Moratti last
night mischievously referred to the failure to remove Capello’s
‘get-out clause’. He said: “I am pleased to see that Fabio Capello can
disentangle himself after the end of the World Cup.”
That clause, however, should be finally erased after
Capello’s talks with Richards.
Capello will
call the seven players to be omitted from his 30-man party tomorrow
after checking on Gareth Barry’s fitness. “I had 23 players in my mind
before the game and I have confirmed those from what I learnt today,”
said Capello.
“I will tell people on June 1. We
have to wait on Barry still to see what the doctor says.”
