Julian Nagelsmann 'not a contender' for Tottenham job as Xabi Alonso interest remains
Tottenham reportedly are not currently considering Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager.
Tottenham are reportedly not considering Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager despite the German being heavily linked with the vacancy at the club. Spurs are still believed to be interested in Xabi Alonso with the former Liverpool midfielder's chances boosted by the latest development.
Tottenham have been on the lookout for a new long-term manager since the club decided to part ways with Antonio Conte in March. The Italian's assistant Cristian Stellini originally took charge in the interim but he was fired a month later with Ryan Mason stepping up again to take the team until the end of the campaign.
A number of names have been linked with the vacancy with Nagelsmann among the most prominent and he would be a popular pick with supporters. However, it appears he is no longer under consideration for the role with ESPN and others reporting that the club do not intend to take their initial interest any further.
Spurs have been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso in recent weeks and the Spaniard may just have taken one step closer to the job without having to do anything in light of the Nagelsmann news.
The search is being led by chairman Daniel Levy who has been keen to consider a range of options. Current caretaker Mason is also believed to still be under consideration with the club hoping to have a permanent appointment in before the start of pre-season.
Mason has been unafraid to take up his qualities as he looks to get the job on a full-time basis, stressing he believes his coaching experiences make him a good fit for the role.
"I feel comfortable, I feel ready," he said upon taking the caretaker reins last month. "'I don't doubt that. You have to be ready and I am ready.

"We handled it well two years ago. A lot has happened in two years but I feel fine and feel ready in this situation.
"I've been coaching for six years, which I think is a long time. I've spent a lot of time on grass but, probably more importantly for me, the people I've worked with and come across have accelerated my growth as an individual.
"There are many people I trust and value their opinion in this training centre and also outside who I am always in communication with."
It remains to be seen who Tottenham decide to appoint as their new manager but with Nagelsmann now out of the running the likes of Alonso and Mason have just taken one step closer.
