John Terry hits back at 'nonsense' as Chelsea icon speaks on linking up with Frank Lampard
John Terry has spoken out on Chelsea reappointing Frank Lampard as interim head coach.
Lampard says Chelsea return was 'easy decision'
John Terry has hit back at ‘nonsense’ after a Chelsea fan urged Frank Lampard not to appoint the former defender to his backroom staff at Stamford Bridge. The former England captain has been loosely linked with a return to the Blues’ first-team coaching setup since Lampard’s appointment as interim manager until the end of the season.
Lampard has replaced the axed former head coach Graham Potter until the end of the season. The 44-year-old club legend will take the reins while the Chelsea hierarchy search for Potter’s long-term successor.
Assistant coaches Ashley Cole, Joe Edwards and Chris Jones will all join Lampard in the dugout. However, some fans have called for iconic former captain Terry to take a role among the first-team staff.
One fan was unhappy with that suggestion and soon faced the wrath of the 42-year-old, who took exception to a claim he plays too much golf and has little coaching experience. “Delighted that Lamps is back and excited by the back room appointments. But please don’t add JT (John Terry) to that list,” Chelsea fan @bluedaze65 wrote.

“Club legend but too much golf and not enough coaching experience to warrant inclusion. We’re past the days of barrack-room bombast.”
Terry, who coaches in Chelsea’s academy, hit back at what he felt was a ‘nonsense’ suggestion. He replied: “Also unbelievable news for everyone at Chelsea to have Lamps back. I know how this works, Frank has his team and if I went into a job I would have mine. I won’t have people talk nonsense.
“Lamps is the best player in our history and this is just what we needed. Super Frank.”
Of course, Terry does have good coaching experience. He was assistant manager at Aston Villa for three years before departing in the summer of 2021. At the time, the former Villa captain said he wanted to spend time with his family before pursuing a managerial role.

But speaking to one of his boyhood idols, the former snooker player Stephen Hendry, Terry revealed that he was now ‘done’ with football management and would only lead a team if Chelsea came calling. "Yeah, I'm done from a managerial point of view. The only job I'd kind of come out of retirement for would be the Chelsea job. To be involved in some sort of capacity in a first-team role,” Terry told Stephen Hendry’s Cue Tips.
"I love my role at the minute. I've got a bit of work with the younger players and I think as well because I've been through that process as a kid myself I'm passing on loads of knowledge to them.
"But I enjoy my golf as well, I want to play a bit of golf and have family time. The reason I left Villa, which I've not really said anywhere, was a family reason. Coming back home and being with my family."
