World Cup 2022 briefing: Day 9
Manchester United are among a host of Premier League clubs that have sent scouts to the 2022 World Cup to watch Canada striker Jonathan David in action. The Red Devils and four other English top-flight suitors have joined Bayern Munich in monitoring the LOSC Lille star in Qatar.
David has caught the eye with his exploits since leaving Gent for France in 2020, scoring 41 goals in 111 Lille appearances. The 22-year-old attacker has registered nine goals and three assists in 15 Ligue 1 games this season, garnering heavyweight interest.
According to transfer expert Ekrem Konur, United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Bayern Munich are all scouting David at the World Cup. He could be in line for a high-profile move across Europe in the next few transfer windows, with Lille reportedly ready to cash in.
However, David has yet to be able to showcase his true potential in the Middle East this winter as Canada struggle in Group F. The North Americans are already eliminated after a 1-0 defeat to Belgium and a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Croatia. Across the two, David took just 70 touches and one shot on target.

David is said to be available for £43million in January, with United at the forefront of clubs searching for attacking reinforcements after terminating Cristiano Ronaldo's contract last week. Erik ten Hag will be keen to recruit a long-term goalscorer, but the club aren't thought to have made many funds available after splashing over £200m in the summer.
The Glazer family's recently-confirmed intention to sell United after a 17-year tenure at the helm could also impact Ten Hag's January activity. And it's thought a short-term option, in the ilk of Odion Ighalo's surprise arrival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is the most likely outcome.

Cody Gakpo is also at the forefront of United's transfer links amid a sensational season at PSV Eindhoven and an impactful World Cup campaign. But he is also likely to demand a fee in excess of £40m, something the Glazers may not be willing to sanction before jumping ship.
David is undoubtedly in Ten Hag's thinking, though, as he is with several other managers across Europe. And despite a disappointing World Cup, that interest is unlikely to go away if he continues his impressive antics at club level.
