Party in Qatar ahead of the World Cup
The Football Supporters’ Association has criticised Qatar for U-turning on their alcohol policy three days before the start of the World Cup. Alcohol will no longer be allowed inside or around the tournament’s stadiums.
Fans will instead be limited to drinking inside the designated fan zones. The FSA say the change in approach leaves supporters unsure over what other U-turns could be made.
A statement read: “If they can change their minds on this at a moment's notice, with no explanation, supporters will have understandable concerns about whether they will fulfil other promises relating to accommodation, transport/cultural issues.”
Fans had been expecting Qatar to relax its strict laws on drinking alcohol. There is usually a zero tolerance policy on consuming alcohol in public in the country, but Qatar had initially suggested that the rules would not be enforced during the World Cup.
The sale of Budweiser, one of FIFA’s largest World Cup sponsors, was initially permitted around the perimeters of the grounds. Fans could buy the beer within three hours before kick-off and up to an hour after full-time if they had a ticket for the match.

However, FIFA released a statement on Friday morning saying that alcohol will only be sold at fan festivals and in licensed venues. It cannot be consumed in or around stadia.
“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” read the statement.
“There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar's World Cup stadiums. Host country authorities and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.
