Despite chief executive David Gill saying United have more than £100million in the bank for new signings , Ferguson has ruled out a spending spree.
And it will fuel concerns among the growing anti-Glazer factions that his hands are being tied in
the transfer market by the club’s American owners, as they battle to control spiralling debts.
“No wholesale buying is needed, as we have a very good squad that just needs tweaking here and there,”
Ferguson told Inside United, the club’s official magazine.
“We have some ideas at the moment but not many players will be joining the club. But in any case, I feel the transfer market prices have been terribly inflated over the last year.
“Looking
at potential squad additions is an ongoing process – it’s not just
confined to a certain time of year – although we obviously don’t reveal
our plans.”
Wayne Rooney’s injury has
underlined that United need at least one new striker, with David Villa
and Karim Benzema on the wanted list.
And most United fans want to see the addition of a top-quality midfielder.
Ferguson
dismissed suggestions that Rooney could make a miraculous recovery from
strained ankle ligaments to play against Bayern Munich in tonight’s
Champions League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford.
Rooney
has made quicker progress than expected but Ferguson says it is too
soon to risk him even as a substitute tonight, although if he continues
his speedy recovery, he could be on the bench for the visit to
Blackburn in the Premier League on Sunday.
He
said: “We have made some good progress with the lad and the medical
team have done fantastic, but I’m not prepared to take the risk if he
is not 100 per cent fit.
“We are looking more at the Manchester City game [on April 17], or maybe Blackburn on Sunday as a sub, possibly.
“Wayne
Rooney is making progress, no doubt, but it’s an ankle injury, the same
as any other and he is like anyone else who has an ankle injury.
“I can’t take a risk with the lad. I don’t think he’ll be on the bench but he might try to persuade me.”
While
United will be without Rooney, Bayern Munich have been boosted by the
return of Arjen Robben from injury and Bastian Schweinsteiger from
suspension.
