Wrexham fans heard booing during minute silence tribute after Queen Elizabeth death
WREXHAM fans could be heard booing loudly during a minute's silence tribute to the Queen.
A group of Wrexham fans could be heard loudly booing during a minute's silence that was planned to honour Queen Elizabeth II following her death last week. Fans of the National League club were asked to participate in the tribute to the long-reigning monarch, who died on September 8 at the age of 96, but seconds later boos could be heard coming from the stands.
Footage uploaded to social media appeared to show the moments before Wrexham's match against Dagenham and Redbridge at the Racecourse Ground where fans from the Welsh club interrupted a tribute to the Queen.
A voice over the tannoy system asked fans to participate in the tribute, with the players gathered arm-in-arm on the centre circle and coaching staff on the touchline.
But the fans showed their opposition as a small smattering of boos eventually turned into a much louder chorus from a group of fans.
There appeared to be some angry members of the crowd who demanded the dissenting voices to be silent and show respect and, eventually, they quietened down as the rest of the tribute played out.
The interruption was condemned by Wrexham fans and other football supporters on social media, given that only a few miles away in Liverpool at Anfield, the minute's silence was respected by the 50,000-strong crowd on Merseyside as Liverpool took on Ajax in the Champions League.
According to local website Wrexham.com, a number of fans 'quietly walked into stands' and took seats after the end of the silence.
Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have shot to prominence over the past 12 months after the global appeal of their famous co-owners.
At the time of writing, neither the club nor the co-owners had publicly commented on the controversial incident.
Wrexham, who reached the National League play-off semi-final before losing to Grimsby, are chasing promotion back to the Football League for the first time and were second in the standings of the National League going into tonight's match against Dagenham.
