According to The Telegraph, Solskjaer has told his players that he plans to implement a 4-3-3 formation next season.
The United manager and his staff are contemplating using two attack-minded midfielders ahead of a sole defensive midfielder shielding the defence.
He has good options to fill the advanced roles, with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba likely candidates.
There is also Donny van de Beek. He could profit with more game time if there are two spaces for forward-thinking midfielders rather than one.
Jadon Sancho's arrival is awaiting official confirmation whilst United close in on deals for Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane and Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier.
Once Solskjaer adds that trio to his ever-improving squad, perhaps attention will turn towards a new midfielder.
However, it's likely United will rely on sales to boost the budget, especially for another high-profile name like Rice.
There is interest in Rennes teenager Eduardo Camavinga, and the Red Devils could strike a deal for around £25million.
However, his preference is thought to be Spain, which could prompt a pursuit of Rice this summer or next.
