Euro 2020: Southgate sends message to squad for Germany clash
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is said to be “disappointed”, with others baffled, after Gareth Southgate left the Everton striker out of the England squad to play Germany. Managers can only name 23 of their 26-strong squads for each game at Euro 2020, and Calvert-Lewin is one of the three England players to miss out.
The Everton forward scored 16 Premier League goals for his club last season and is the only out-and-out centre-forward replacement for Harry Kane in the England squad.
But Southgate omitted Calvert-Lewin from his 23 to play Germany in the round of 16.
The decision is said to have left the player bitterly “disappointed”, with reports in The Athletic suggesting that the people close to the player are “baffled” by the decision.
Southgate has no shortage of other attacking options on the bench, with Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount and Phil Foden among the substitutes.

Kyle Walker moves to the right of a back-three, with Tyrone Mings remaining on the bench. The two-man central midfield of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips remains.
