Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has "failed" to create a "winning culture" at the club after they were beaten on penalties by Villarreal in the Europa League final. United drew 1-1 with the La Liga side across 120 minutes, before David de Gea’s missed spot kick saw Villarreal win 11-10 on penalties.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand stated that United need to “go out and recruit the right players” this summer so that they can get back to winning trophies.
He also stated that by reaching the final and not being able to get over the line "Solskjaer and his team failed".
“This window is massive, it’s a massive window for Man United now,” he said.
“The recruitment team, the owners, the CEO, the manager, the staff need to go out and recruit the right players that fit the bill, to take this team from getting to finals and can’t get over the line, to finishing the job.

“That was the test tonight and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team failed, you have to put it bluntly - it’s a fact.
“You’re trying to build a winning culture, you’re trying to create an environment when you can see the players becoming that unit, that team, accustomed to playing in these situations.
“If you get to the final, you’re there to win it, that’s it, and if you don’t, to be brutal about it, it’s a failure in that sense.”
