Manchester United legend Roy Keane has slammed Edinson Cavani for not warming up before his introduction against Arsenal on Sunday. The Uruguay international was brought on by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a bid to win the game. But that didn’t happen, with the Uruguay international cutting a distant figure at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were outplayed by Arsenal in their Premier League clash on Sunday.

The Red Devils only tested Bernd Leno through Mason Greenwood and Nemanja Matic but, those chances aside, created precious little.

Arsenal picked up all three points courtesy of a penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who converted from the spot after Paul Pogba fouled Hector Bellerin in the box.

Solskjaer threw on Cavani in the hope of securing a result but the Uruguay international did precious little during his cameo.

And, after the match, United legend Roy Keane called out the 33-year-old for failing to warm up prior to his introduction.

“Truthfully, no. I don’t think so,” he said when asked if United players were ready and motivated.

“The manager’s job, of course he’s got to oversee everything, but I never looked at a manager all my career before a match, and I’m talking about great managers and some bad managers going back to when I was eight years of age, I never looked at a manager to say, ‘are you going to motivate me today?’, that comes from within, that comes from your DNA, what you stand for, your background, your background, your family, your teammates.

“The guys turned up today, we looked at the warm-ups, I’m intrigued when I look at the warm-ups, Cavani never tried a leg, he didn’t actually do a warm-up did he.

“And then he’s coming on as sub for Manchester United going, ‘can you get us back in the game?’.

“And Ole’s talking about, ‘well we have to get him up to speed’. Sometimes it’s up to the player to do something.”

Cavani was making just his third appearance for United since joining on a free transfer from PSG on deadline day.

But, before the match against Arsenal, Solskjaer hailed the veteran - insisting he, Donny van de Beek and Alex Telles allowed for greater tactical flexibility.

“We’ve been searching for our fitness and form [in the opening weeks],” he said.

“Good players can always play together.

“It’s very unpredictable.

“We have different players and different systems to play now. Last season, we put a lot of effort into our principles, the way we want to play.

“This season, we’ve added quality in the squad with Cavani, van de Beek and Telles. Paul [Pogba] is back fit, Marcus is back fit, so we’ve got more options.

“We’ve got more options tactically. If you want to play 4-3-3, a diamond, 3-4-3, 3-5-2… we’ve got more options.

“[As long as] there’s a balance in the team. You can’t play 10 forwards in a team, of course, you need balance and that’s what we need to find.”

United are next in action against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Wednesday night (5.55pm).
