Man Utd criticised over failure to sign defender by Laurens
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have more questions than answers following the close of the transfer window after Manchester United reportedly failed to sign any of his four top targets. United announced a flurry of deals on deadline day to add to Donny van de Beek, who joined earlier in the summer.
Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles were both completed late in the day on Monday while Facundo Pellistri arrived in a £9million deal from Uruguayan outfit Penarol.
An agreement in principle is also in place to sign promising young talent Amad Traore from Atalanta in January.
It brought an end to an otherwise frustrating transfer window for United, who saw their efforts to sign Jadon Sancho fall short.
The 20-year-old was clearly United's top target from early in the summer and they seemingly had a free run at trying to sign him.
According to ESPN, Solskjaer and his own recruitment team had identified four main targets he wanted in the transfer window.
The United manager's interest in Sancho was no secret while he was also said to be a big admirer of Jack Grealish.
Any more away from Villa Park appeared to hinge on the club's survival in the Premier League, with Aston Villa just avoiding the drop last season.
Saving their Premier League status led to Villa slapping an £80m price-tag on Grealish with United clearly not interested in meeting those demands.
