Chelsea: Defeat to West Ham was ‘not a surprise’ says Lampard
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will have to sign new defenders in the summer after the shock 3-2 loss to West Ham on Wednesday. The Blues missed a golden opportunity to overtake Leicester in third place when Andriy Yarmolenko's late strike gave the Hammers a big win at the London Stadium.
Jermaine Jenas was specifically critical of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso’s performance against David Moyes' side and believes Lampard should seriously consider signing new defenders in the summer.
Jenas told Match of the Day when asked whether the West Ham result proves Chelsea need to strengthen in defence: "Definitely.
"We heard Frank Lampard saying he wasn’t happy about the three goals they conceded. They got away with the first goal [which was ruled out by VAR] too because it should have stood.
"You would have thought they would have learnt from the first goal but they don’t and they concede.

"Christensen, I’m not sure what he’s thinking [with West Ham’s second goal]. He jumps over Michail Antonio so he knows he’s there but then he doesn’t take the care to see where he is afterwards and just runs past him.
"With West Ham’s winner, Alonso is thinking about going forward, that’s why he doesn’t track back the way he should have.
"And then Rudiger must be the only player in the Premier League that doesn’t know Yarmolenko wants to cut back inside here.

"I’m not happy with any of the goals. You don’t get given victories for scoring two goals, you have to be better than that.
"It is why we are fighting for top four not one or two, because we don’t get things right as much as the big boys do.
"I am not happy but at the same time we are two points ahead of Manchester United, who have been going great for some time."
