Manchester United are closing in on the record for most penalties in a single Premier League season after their 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Friday. The Red Devils found themselves trailing courtesy of Steven Bergwijn’s strike slipped under the flailing David De Gea. But Bruno Fernandes levelled from 12 yards after Eric Dier fouled Paul Pogba inside the box.
According to the Premier League’s official website, United are now closing in on the record for most penalties awarded within a single season.
They are now just two shy of the record of 13 penalties awarded, shared by Crystal Palace in 2004/2005 and Leicester in 2015/2016.
Last term, United were given 12 spot-kicks.
But they’re now one short of that tally and, with eight matches to go, could yet set a new top-flight record.
Since the start of last season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have taken 23 penalties with the likes of Fernandes, Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard all trying their luck.

“The VAR is there to do the job, I’m not unhappy with Moss, I’m unhappy with the VAR.
“I’m unhappy with Moss for the second penalty because he didn’t give the free-kick for [Serge] Aurier, then he gave a cheap, non-penalty, and VAR tells the truth.”
Fernandes felt United deserved to pick up all three points in north London - but admitted a draw was a good result.
"I think we did well, we start well with our ideas but they score on the counter-attack," Fernandes said.
"But I think we had a lot of chances to score more and it's not enough for us because we want to win every game.
