Fernandes has been in sensational form this season, netting 15 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions for Sporting.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made signing a midfielder a priority in the January transfer window following injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.
And the Red Devils will conclude a deal for Fernandes as soon as personal terms are agreed and the player passes a medical.
Fernandes could make his debut for United against Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.
After the Red Devils announced the agreement, injured striker Marcus Rashford was quick to welcome his new team-mate.
He simply posted on Twitter: "Welcome Bruno."
Diogo Dalot also welcomed his countryman with an appluase emoji and the Portuguese flag.
Fernandes has made no secret it has been dream to play in the Premier League and he will now do that in front of the Old Trafford crowd as United look to turn their fortunes around.
