Andre Gomes suffered a horrific leg injury during Everton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham which saw Son Heung-min sent off.
Andre Gomes: Pochettino sends his support following injury
Everton captain Seamus Coleman consoled Son Heung-min in Tottenham’s dressing room after the forward was reduced to tears over Andre Gomes’ horrific leg injury.
Gomes was rushed to hospital straight from the Goodison Park turf with his ankle ostensibly hanging at 90 degrees.
The injury occurred after Son took down Gomes from behind, causing the Everton midfielder to lose his footing before colliding with Serge Aurier.
As Son went over to check on an agonising Gomes he turned away in shock, eventually breaking down in tears.
Although referee Martin Atkinson initially drew a yellow card from his pocket he sent off a distraught Son, much to the confusion of some on-lookers.
"I want to thank the captain, Seamus Coleman - he came into the dressing room to console Son,” Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed after the game.
Coleman suffered a leg break in March 2017 while representing Republic of Ireland which ruled him out for 10 months.
“I think Son is devastated because of the consequences,” Pochettino added.
“I want to send my best wishes to Gomes. What’s important now is that he recovers well.
“We are all devastated but of course for Everton it is devastating."
Son is now set to miss league fixtures against Sheffield United, West Ham and Bournemouth but Pochettino was reluctant to berate the decision to send off his player.
"It’s not important if it was yellow or red,” the Argentine coach added.
“The decision from the referee was yellow but then I think VAR changed it.
“For me of course it’s unfair. He landed in a bad situation."
