What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be thinking about Man Utd beating Liverpool
Manchester United will aim to get their season back on track agains Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will see beating Liverpool as an opportunity to kick-start his side’s season, claims European football expert Gabriele Marcotti.
United welcome bitter rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday.
The visitors are favourites having won all eight of their Premier League matches so far this season and sit 15 points clear of their 12th-placed opponents.
But Marcotti believes Solskjaer will know it is a great chance to prove doubters wrong.
This is an opportunity, this is an opportunity to jump-start things
“It’s funny because even as United’s performances seemingly get worse and worse, it’s almost like there’s a sense of resignation rather than a sense of anger and outrage,” Marcotti said on The Headline Makers.
“And I kind of put myself in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shoes and say ‘Do you know what? This is an opportunity, this is an opportunity to jump-start things, these are the guys who we knocked off the perch famously, I’ll make sure I introduce that in my pre-game team-talk’.”
Meanwhile, ESPN reporter Melissa Reddy says there is a chance form will go out of the window on Sunday.
“The [United] team will feed off the fans and the fans will be defiant at Old Trafford,” Reddy said.
“The opening minutes will be antagonistic, in fact the whole warm-up their fans will be up for it because no matter where they are in the table, this is the fixture in English football.
“Not so long ago Liverpool were where Manchester United are in the sense of not going to be challenging for the title, just there and thereabouts.
“But Liverpool would [still] go into that fixture, you know, Danny Murphy’s winners and all that stuff, so often it doesn’t matter about your form, it doesn’t matter if you’re the dominant force or not, because it’s a fixture that neither side want to lose.”
