Some go to clubs because of this money, where they have not played Champions League for years
Hans-Joachim Watzke on Pierre Emerick Aubameyang
Watzke was reluctant to sell Aubameyang but yielded when Arsenal stumped up a then club-record fee of £56million.
And when asked about the striker’s departure, Watzke couldn’t help but aim a dig at the 30-year-old.
“Of course it is hard to keep a player in the face of such sums,” he told Suddeutsche Zeitung. “Some go to clubs because of this money, where they have not played Champions League for years.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays great at Arsenal, will probably be warm-hearted when he looks at his bank account, but on Wednesdays, will be saddened when he has to watch the Champions League on television.”

Although he’s yet to play Champions League football for the north Londoners, Aubameyang has shone since swapping the Bundesliga for the Premier League.
In 73 appearances, Aubameyang has scored 49 goals and provided 26 assists for Unai Emery’s side.
And in eight appearances so far this season, he’s found the back of the net eight times.
Aubameyang and his Arsenal team-mates will be back in action on Thursday night, welcoming Belgian giants Standard Liege to the Emirates for their second Europa League group game.
