MANCHESTER UNITED and their fans have been waiting for a long time for a victory like Sunday’s against Chelsea, claims Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel.

“It took a little bit of time for Old Trafford to get going but once the goals went in the atmosphere here was fantastic,” Schmeichel told Premier League Productions.
“It’s a bit weird, it wasn’t a 4-0 match, I don’t think United played so much better than Chelsea.
“But people here are very, very happy.
“I think this is something that the club and the team and the fans here have been wanting this to happen for a very, very long time.

“That little bit of luck that gives you one or two goals that are unexpected, and it came today."
Schmeichel does not think it is all doom and gloom for Chelsea though.
He praised the performance of United goalkeeper David de Gea, who was forced to make a number of saves.
And the Dane saw enough of Chelsea’s younger players to see plenty of potential going forward.

“You think about how many saves that David de Gea had to make in the whole game plus Tammy Abraham hit the post within five minutes, it could have been a completely different game,” Schmeichel added.
“As I said before this was never a 4-0 match, it doesn’t feel like that at all.
“Frank Lampard, his first game as a Premier League manager, it’s a tough one for him to take.
“But I really think at times Chelsea played well, they have some exciting players in there.”
