The real reason behind Leicester forcing Man Utd to pay record fee for Harry Maguire
MANCHESTER UNITED have completed the transfer for Leicester City’s Harry Maguire today for a record £80m, and the reason behind the Foxes persistence in their valuation has been revealed.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has added the England international to his squad after agreeing an £80m deal with the Foxes.
The fee will be £5m more than Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018; the current record transfer fee for a defender.
But, it’s now been revealed that Leicester dug in their heels for a record fee as they’d be losing a significant proportion of it after the deal is completed.
Maguire’s former club, Hull City, had a sell-on clause in the deal they agreed with Leicester
Maguire’s former club, Hull City, had a sell-on clause in the deal they agreed with Leicester two years ago.
That means Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers will be losing around 15 per cent of any negotiated transfer fee with United.
Hull are, therefore, set to earn £9.5m from the transfer without even being involved in the talks.
Leicester clearly want to make as much money as possible from the sale of Maguire, which could be why they forced United to pay the world-record fee.

The England international passed his medical at United, and was announced as a Red Devil on Monday.
Maguire was pictured heading into United’s training ground on Sunday after completing the medical.
Solskjaer was delighted to have recruited Maguire, and claimed he’s one of the best centre-backs in the world.
“He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure," he said.
“Coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes, I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.
