William Saliba: Arsenal needs to strengthen squad says pundit
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has been chasing the France Under-20 international's signature for several weeks.
However, his pursuit of the 18-year-old was derailed somewhat by Tottenham's interest in the up-and-coming defender, who was one of Saint-Etienne's star performers last season.
Earlier this month, it was claimed Spurs had moved ahead of their north London rivals in the race for the centre-back.
But according to BBC journalist David Ornstein, the Gunners are closing in on the Frenchman.
On Wednesday afternoon, Ornstein tweeted: “Arsenal set to win race to sign William Saliba.
"Close to completion after Saint Etienne centre-back opted for #AFC. Loan back to #ASSE next season.”
Emery is planning a major overhaul of his squad this summer as he looks to build a side capable of challenging for Champions League football next season.
The Spaniard is currently eyeing deals for Real Madrid's Dani Ceballos and Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney.

And according to Ornstein, Arsenal's pursuits of the duo are still ongoing.
He added: “Also working on loan for Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos & continue pursuit of Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney #RMFC #CelticFC.”
Saliba's seemingly imminent move to the Emirates comes on the back of a stellar debut season at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
Former Arsenal ace Lauren was immensly impressed by what he saw of the youngster and believes has a ‘bright’ future ahead of him.
“Yes, he looks a very good player,” said the Arsenal Invincible told AmericanGambler.com.
“Strong, tall, can come out of the back with the ball and an international for France.
“He reads the game very well, which is important for a player at the back.
“You have to anticipate and he looks very good at just 18, so the future is bright!”
