John Terry backed to become Newcastle manager but he will face one transfer problem
NEWCASTLE UNITED should go down the route of employing an up-and-coming coach like John Terry.
John Terry would have hands tied at Newcastle says Michael Gray
That is the opinion of former Sunderland and Blackburn defender Michael Gray.
Chelsea legend Terry has emerged as a potential candidate for the Newcastle job.
The ex-England captain has been the assistant manager to Dean Smith at Aston Villa since retiring from playing last October.
So the Newcastle job would be his first role as a manager.
It’s a great opener for John if he wants to go down that route
But, following the departure of Rafa Benitez, Gray believes Terry is the profile of manager Newcastle should be looking at.
However, Gray admits Terry may face a problem when it comes to making new signings.
Benitez was at odds with owner Mike Ashley throughout his time at St James’ Park when it came to attempting to bringing in players.
“Well every name under the sun has been touted with this job,” Gray said on talkSPORT.
“I think maybe [a younger manager] is the route that they need to go down.
“Someone who potentially wants to be a manger, he’s done his due-diligence.
“He’s done a little bit of coaching at Aston Villa as we all know. He’s got great experience in the game.
“Is it a job that he’d actually walk into and his hands are tied?
“I think that’s the big problem with everyone kind of turning down Newcastle at the moment.
“It’s a great opener for John if he wants to go down that route.
“But he’s stuck with the players that he’s got and maybe they’re going to lose even more.”
