Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a huge admirer of Longstaff, who impressed for Newcastle last season.
The Red Devils boss is seeking midfield reinforcements to compensate for the losses of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera.
Herrera snubbed a late contract offer from Manchester United back in May and is set to join Ligue 1 giants PSG, who have offered him a bumper pay packet.
Fellaini, meanwhile, quit for Chinese Super League outfit Shandong Luneng Taishan during the January transfer window.
Longstaff is viewed by Solskjaer as a player with the potential to emulate United greats Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick.
And the I say that United will ramp up their interest in the 21-year-old once Newcastle’s managerial vacancy is filled.
The Magpies announced earlier this week that Rafa Benitez would be leaving, saying in a club statement: “It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, 2019.
“We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.”
Benitez leaving Newcastle has seen the Premier League club linked with a variety of managers from across the world.
