Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offers brutally honest assessment of Old Trafford test
MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised fans that the club will fight for trophies, but warned them of the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has endured a torrid start to his reign as permanent manager at Old Trafford after a blistering start as caretaker.
The Norwegian saw his side exit both the FA Cup and Champions League before missing out on a top four spot, and he has named the latter as a target for next season.
“Next season we will make sure to climb closer to the top,” he told Hantil TV 2 in Norway.
“There are not so many points to the top four, and we will fight for trophies.
“The margins are small in several matches, but just like Manchester City and Liverpool are so far ahead that we can't think of taking it again in one go.
“We must improve ourselves and not think about anything other than what we can do about ourselves.
“There are some teams that are good and it is a super challenge to catch up with the teams.
“We did it before with Manchester United. We will always be able to get better, so we'll see what the other teams will be.”
Doubts have begun to surface over whether Solskjaer is the man to bring glory back to Old Trafford, but he remains adamant that he can make the changes that are needed.
He continued: “Of course, we see great challenges.
“It is a great honour for me to be on the coaching side to be allowed to build Manchester United again.
“We're gonna take up the fight. We've done it before.
“Manchester United has gone seasons without winning trophies before.
“Next season we will make sure to climb closer to the top. There are not so many points to the top four, and we will fight for trophies.”
Although he expects United to begin winning trophies again, Solskjaer admits that winning the Premier League title next year is unrealistic.
He concluded: “When I came in, people said that there were light battles, but there are no easy games in the Premier League.”
