United reportedly have not yet made an offer for the Englishman and Newcastle are not interested in selling.
Solskjaer is ostensibly keen on assembling a squad embellished with young, homegrown players.
The structure in which United will operate in the transfer window is still not clear as the potential arrival of a technical director clouds the club.
The club’s impressive third quarter financial results were published yesterday, though, and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward vowed to back Solskjaer in the transfer market.

"Preparations for the new season are under way and the underlying strength of our business will allow us to support the manager and his team as we look to the future,” Woodward said.
"Everyone at the club - the board, the manager, the squad and all the staff - are resolute in our desire to get United back to the top of English football. We continually look to improve staff on and off the pitch to achieve this.
"The strength of our business means we have the financial resources to continue to provide a solid foundation for backing the manager and creating success on the pitch. This, as ever, remains our number one goal."
Although United fans were happy to hear Woodward’s words, they were not so pleased with the Longstaff links.
“OMG huge news,” one sarcastically began. “Imagine Scott McTominay and Longstaff !!!! Watch out Man City we are gunning for you !!!”

Another fan cited the potential midfield next season, simmering: “McTominay Longstaff Fred. Miserable 2019/20 incoming.”
One on-looker opined: “How the mighty have fallen.”
Referencing the failed signing of Alexis Sanchez, who was filmed showing his pianistic skills in United’s transfer announcement video, one user joked: “Can he play the piano?”
And, sometimes, simple is the most effective, as one fan displayed in his one-word response: “Christ.”
