David De Gea to be DROPPED for Man Utd vs Chelsea? Solskjaer backed for big decision
MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper David De Gea should be left out of the starting XI against Chelsea this afternoon.
Man United should REST De Gea claims Ian Darke
That is according to Premier League commentator and ESPN FC pundit Ian Darke.
De Gea has started all 35 league games for Manchester United so far this season.
However, the Spaniard has had a poor campaign by his own standards and was criticised for his role in goals scored by Everton, Barcelona and Manchester City in recent defeats for the Red Devils.
United’s number two Sergio Romero has made six appearances this season across the cup competitions.
I think actually Manchester United should give him a rest
Ahead of the clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, Darke was asked to name his combined XI from the two sides.
He picked Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal ahead of De Gea and says it is time the Spaniard was given a break and Romero handed a chance instead.
“I’m sure the boys will have one or two arguments there, the goalkeeper maybe,” Darke said.
“At the moment, you couldn’t pick De Gea, could you?
“I think actually Manchester United should give him a rest because they’ve got a good number two in Romero.
“So for the moment I would say Arrizabalaga in goal, but he hasn’t been uprooting too many trees either.”
In reaction to Darke, former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley admitted David De Gea has not been playing at the level expected.
However, he cannot see him being dropped by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“Ian’s right about the goalkeepers, I don’t think either of them have been convincing,’ Burley said.
“But De Gea I think has got other things on his mind at the moment and I think there has been suggestions for him to be dropped.
“But I don’t think that will be the case.”
