Ed Woodward is the safest person at United says expert
Fletcher spent 12 years at Manchester United, proving to be vital in United’s midfield during his career.
He joined West Brom in 2015 before going on to Stoke, where he is out of contract at the end of the current season.
And, according to the Telegraph, Fletcher is now under consideration for a role in United’s recruitment strategy.
It’s claimed that Fletcher would work alongside Mike Phelan, who is expected to move upstairs from assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to become technical director.
Fletcher would be responsible for identifying talent and helping to organise the club’s scouting department.
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is believed to be keen to revamp the backroom staff at Old Trafford with many fans wanting the club to appoint a director of football.
The club want the roles to be filled by people who understand Manchester United and its values.
But whether Fletcher wants to take the job remains to be seen with the former midfielder also being linked to the Scotland manager role.

Fletcher has been critical of United for the direction they have gone since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December, the Scot said: "When Ferguson left, people said that was the worst squad ever to win the league, I don't buy that, but we did need three big hitters to come in.
"That was a perfect opportunity but Moyes didn't do it - he only signed Marouane Fellaini but we needed another central defender, we needed a play-making midfielder and we could've done with a striker - that was the beginning of these problems.
"The squad has not improved since Ferguson and it's had £700m spent on it, which is a massive concern."
