Who Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has invited to training ground revealed
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has invited former team-mate Paul Scholes to Manchester United’s training ground to talk about his brief stint as Oldham manager.
Scholes resigned from his post as Oldham manager on Thursday, saying it “became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role”.
The former England international was in the job just 31 days and oversaw one win, three draws and three losses at his boyhood club.
In response to his swift exit, Solskjaer took no time in making Scholes feel welcome back at Manchester United’s Aon training complex in Carrington.
“He’s probably got his reasons why he left, so you’ve gotta ask him,” Solskjaer said when probed on Scholes’ shock departure.
He’s invited here if he wants to come and have a little chat about [leaving Oldham]
“He’s invited here if he wants to come and have a little chat about it.
“We’ve texted and it didn’t work out, that’s just management.”
Scholes informed Oldham chairman Abdallah Lemsagam of his decision via WhatsApp, with the legendary midfielder’s full statement reading: “It is with great regret that I have decided to leave the club with immediate effect.
“I hoped to at the very least, see out my initial term of 18 months as the manager of a club I've supported all my life. The fans, players, my friends and family all knew how proud and excited I was to take this role.
"In the short period since I took on the role it unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role.
“I wish the fans, the players and the staff - who have been tremendous - all the best for the rest of the season and will continue to watch and support the club as a fan."
In return, Oldham thanked the 11-time Premier League winner for his efforts in a club statement, but Lemsagam explained how they were equally disappointed with the outcome.
"Oldham Athletic are disappointed by Paul's decision to resign and surprised by the reasons he has given," Lemsagam told Sky Sports News.
"The club gave Paul all the support and autonomy that he asked for. He did not raise his concerns at all, informally or formally, prior to his resignation.
“He gave no opportunity to address any issues at all, simply resigning by text and then refusing to discuss matters.
“Management is a difficult job and we would have worked with Paul to find solutions, had we been given the chance.”
Scholes and Solskjaer played at United together for the duration of the latter’s spell, winning nine major honours together in that time.
Solskjaer has been very welcoming of the perceived Old Trafford old guard since taking his role as United caretaker boss, leaning on Sir Alex Ferguson for advice and inviting past players such as Eric Cantona and Patrice Evra into the dressing room after their Champions League triumph against Paris Saint-Germain.
