Phil Thompson trolls Man Utd fans: They are 'frightened' of Liverpool title domination
MANCHESTER UNITED fans are "frightened" Liverpool will win the Premier League and dominate for years to come, claims Reds legend Phil Thompson.
Liverpool are currently second in the Premier League table, level on points with leaders Manchester City but with a game in hand.
Jurgen Klopp is looking to end a 29-year spell without a top-flight title at Anfield.
Liverpool won the old first division 11 times between 1973 and 1990, with Thompson winning seven of them.
And he claims Manchester United fans and football supporters in general are scared Liverpool will return to those glory days again.
They’re starting to get nervous of Liverpool winning the Premier League
“They’re frightened,” Thompson told Sky Sports News.
“Honestly, they’re frightened. Not just Man United fans, a lot of fans are worried about the cycle coming round again.
“And that’s why they’re starting to get nervous of Liverpool winning the Premier League.
"I think that goes for a lot of people.
Manchester United need better players claims Micky Quinn
“They don’t want it like the '70s and '80s again and I think a lot of people wouldn’t want Manchester United to do it again. So be wary.”
Thompson was asked which trophy he would prefer Liverpool won this season, ahead of the Champions League last-16 first leg against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
And his answer was unequivocal, replying: “Take it from me, it’s the Premier League.
“It’s been far too long [since Liverpool won the league]. I would think 99 per cent [of fans would agree].
“The Premier League has become the holy grail. It has been the burden over too many years.
“But that would be the pinnacle and I think Jurgen Klopp, if he was able to pull this off in these days of this big money which is being thrown at Manchester City and thrown at Chelsea over these last years, for Liverpool to be able to win the Premier League title I think would be quite unbelievable.
“Yes we got to the Champions League final last year and what a wonderful occasion it was, we didn’t win. We remember the experience of 2005.
“But give me, with most Liverpool fans, the Premier League any day.”
United and Liverpool go head to head in the Premier League on Sunday at Old Trafford.
