The Germany international began the season out of the team as Unai Emery opted to stick with the experienced Petr Cech.
But a hamstring injury picked up against Watford, handed Leno the chance to stake his claim for the number one jersey.
And it has taken the opportunity with both hands despite a few shaky moments.
It remains early days but Leno is not at the same level as Manchester United’s David de Gea, Manchester City’s Ederson and Liverpool’s Allison.
But he probably belongs in a congested second tier of goalkeepers which includes the occasionally erratic Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris, Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga and West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski.
Leno hasn’t been helped by the regular changes to the defence in front of him and he can be relatively pleased with how he has adapted to English football.

The arrival of the Swiss defender was meant to provide leadership and experience to a backline which has struggled for several years.
Hector Bellerin was the clear first choice with Lichtsteiner stepping in when needed.
But the right-back has looked every bit of his 35 years of age.
Slow, weak aerially, ponderous on the ball and rash in the tackle sum up his displays for Arsenal.
He has been a liability all season and opposition teams have clearly targeted his side of the defence.
Lichtsteiner has the option of extending his stay but Arsenal would be silly to keep him on.

The Greek defender was a questionable signing in the summer after a couple of indifferent seasons at Dortmund.
But he has been a steady and reliable presence in the Arsenal defence.
The 30-year-old has suffered from injury at key moments and Arsenal have missed him when he’s not there.
And Arsenal have looked best defensively when Sokratis has been alongside either Rob Holding and Laurent Koscielny.
With an overhaul of the defence desperately needed in the summer, keeping Sokratis would be wise.

Maybe it is because Arsenal have lacked a ball-winning midfielder for so long that Torreira has stood out so much.
But when Arsenal have been at their best, Torreira has been at the heart of it, driving the team forward with his energy, tenacity and battling qualities.
He is ideal to what Emery wants to do at Arsenal and at just 22, he should be a long term fixture in the team.
And his goal against Tottenham was an incredible moment for him and the club.
Arsenal’s indifferent form has appeared to coincide with a drop in Torreira’s level.
But the Uruguayan is one of the first names on the team sheet and an astute acquisition.
