United won 1-0 thanks to an early Marcus Rashford goal to maintain Solskjaer’s unbeaten start.
But Phelan, who came in as assistant following the Norwegian’s arrival, says recent form is no masterstroke.
“I had a good chat with Micky Phelan at Leicester,” Townsend said on Premier League Today.
“Micky was just very honest in that there’s no hidden secrets here, this isn’t stuff we’ve learn on a coaching course.

“This is walking into a training ground where the atmosphere was a bit depressed, where players knew they weren’t playing very well and it’s reminding them of how good they are.
“And when they do play well, telling them how well they’re playing.
“There’s nothing wrong with making your players superstars, there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s part of the job.
“And he said ‘we’ve got seven or eight injuries when we arrived, we’ve got one now’.
“[Marcos] Rojo he said is the only one I think that’s struggling a bit.”
