Tottenham fans will NOT be happy with Gary Neville’s comment after Man City vs Liverpool
TOTTENHAM cannot be considered as title challengers despite sitting just six points adrift of table-toppers Liverpool.
That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.
Spurs almost entered themselves into the title race via default during the Christmas period as a string of wins saw them leapfrog reigning champions Manchester City.
The north London club then lost their next match at home to Wolves, however, and the fanbase broke down with what they perceived as bottling the first sniff they got of catching leaders Liverpool.
The festive period’s dust has settled now, with Spurs just six points adrift of the Reds.
I don't think they've got the depth and the quality of [Liverpool and Manchester City]
City overtook the Lilywhites last night with a superb 2-1 victory over Jurgen Klopp’s men - their first loss of the season.
It means Pep Guardiola’s side have just a four-point deficit on Liverpool, making the title race tight once again.
Neville commentated on the high-level clash and made a conclusion about the title race after the match which will anger Spurs fans.
Asked on Sky Sports whether Spurs should be considered in the race, Neville replied: “I don't think so.
“That's not being disrespectful to Tottenham, but I don't think they've got the depth and the quality of these two teams.”
Mauricio Pochettino did not receive leverage from the Spurs board to buy any players in the summer, becoming the first Premier League team since the introduction of the summer transfer window to not sign a single player.
The roster has coped well despite any new recruits, but Neville feels it will eventually cost them.
"They have a fantastic squad and a fantastic team,” the former Manchester United captain asserted.
“But they are not at the same level as these two (Liverpool and Manchester City)."
