Recent reports have claimed that, amid the club’s struggles and with fan frustration growing by the day, the Glazers are preparing to cash in.
The fans are outraged with the performances on the pitch and things reached a new low this weekend with the abject defeat at Liverpool.
And the Independent say those close to United reckon they will sell should they receive an offer of £4billion.
United remain a commercial juggernaut and financial goldmine.
But with fans growing increasingly frustrated, the Glazers could be set to make the huge decision to sell up.
The Independent say United insiders think a takeover has been discussed through back channels.
And, possibly, at even higher levels.
Should that be the case, then the report says it is unlikely the Glazers will make funds available in January.
Mourinho wants to strengthen his squad in the New Year with a new centre-back top of his priority list.
But, on the flip side for the 55-year-old, it will mean his job is safe.
For now, at least, because of the payoff Mourinho would demand should he be dismissed.

The Glazers were recently pictured in Saudi Arabia, with the Saudis being tipped to take over.
However, that could again cause controversy.
The Saudis are in the spotlight themselves over their political system.
But whether that impacts their chances of buying United remains to be seen.
