Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher hits out at Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho over trophy jibe
LIVERPOOL legend Jamie Carragher has hit out at Jose Mourinho, claiming the Manchester United boss was not brought to the club to win the League Cup.
Mourinho riled some Liverpool supporters this week with comments ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United at Anfield.
The Portuguese says the current Reds team is not the best he has played against because they are yet to win a trophy.
“I played against a Liverpool side who was a European champion,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.
“And I don’t know if this one is better or not I know the another one was European champion and this one won nothing.
Jose Mourinho wasn’t brought to Man United to win the League Cup and Europa League
“So I think I have to respect the ones that did it. I have to respect the ambition of the ones that didn’t.”
Carragher agrees Jurgen Klopp’s success at Liverpool will be measured by how many trophies he ends up winning.
But he pointed out to Mourinho that his former side have a much better chance of winning the Premier League or Champions League than United do.
“Yes I agree with that [you have to win trophies to be successful],” Jamie Carragher said.
“There’s no doubt at the end of Jurgen Klopp’s time it can’t be some great rise and everyone talking because the football was great and become Newcastle of the Kevin Keegan era.
“I’d still say that about it and the same would be said about Jurgen Klopp.
“What I would say to Jose Mourinho is though he wasn’t brought to Man United to win the League Cup and Europa League.
“He was brought to bring the Premier League and the Champions League.
“Liverpool look a lot more closer under Jurgen Klopp to do that than Jose Mourinho does.
“So yes, he’s won a couple of trophies. But that’s not what you were brought in to be Manchester United manager for.
“But, in three or four years when the Jurgen Klopp era is over, or longer whatever it may be, there has to be something to show for it.”
