Man Utd news: ‘He was outstanding, he caused havoc’ - one star singled out vs Southampton
MARCUS RASHFORD was singled out for praise during Manchester United’s Premier League clash at Southampton on Saturday evening.
Rashford started up front with Romelu Lukaku in a new-look 3-5-2 formation from Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.
The change did not pay dividends early on though as struggling Southampton raced into a 2-0 lead.
Stuart Armstrong scored a fine goal to open the scoring before a sublime free kick from Cedric doubled the hosts’ advantage.
Rashford gave away the free kick that led to Cedric’s goal but former United striker Michael Owen says that was the only bad thing he did in the first half.
I think that Rashford by and large is the only player in the Manchester United team that does that
The 21-year-old laid on the assist for Romelu Lukaku’s first goal in 12 games to reduce the deficit.
Marcus Rashford then ran at the Southampton defence with his frightening pace and his low cross was turned home by Ander Herrera to equalise before half time.
And at the interval Owen praised the forward for having the biggest impact on the match.
The pundit claims there is no one else like Rashford in the United squad with regards to running at opposition defences.
“I thought he’s been outstanding today,” Owen said on BT Sport.
“He made two mistakes for the free kick for Southampton.
“But he’s the one player, we spoke before the game about running, it’s very, very simple but in this day and age you have to run and run fast and be direct and make things happen.
“I think that Rashford by and large is the only player in the Manchester United team that does that.
“I thought Ashley Young had a good first half.
“But Rashford runs at players and it causes havoc, it changes the picture all the time.
“And when he does that it’s obviously another goal.”
