Man Utd player ratings vs Young Boys: Rashford wasteful, Fellaini dire before late strike
MANCHESTER UNITED stumbled to an unconvincing win over Young Boys in their Champions League clash at Old Trafford, but which of Jose Mourinho's men impressed most?
Man United: Mourinho discusses Rashford performance
Manchester United sealed their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a dour 1-0 victory over Young Boys.
Marcus Rashford went closest to breaking the deadlock early on when he chipped over the bar in a one-on-one situation.
The England international spurned several other good opportunities to score while Anthony Martial was also particularly wasteful, having been on a hot streak in the Premier League recently.
David De Gea pulled off a superb second-half save to prevent a frustrating night from getting any worse before Marouane Fellaini struck with just seconds remaining to secure United's spot in the next round.
Express Sport has rated how the Manchester United players performed against Young Boys – do you agree?
Manchester United player ratings vs Young Boys
GK: David De Gea – 8
Barely anything to do for much of the game with Young Boys struggling to mount any meaningful attacks in the opening hour.
However, the Spaniard kept his concentration to pull off a world-class save and keep his side in the contest.
RB: Antonio Valencia – 5
Looked comfortable if unspectacular on his return to the side, but picked up a yellow and a knock right before his substitution.
CB: Chris Smalling – 7
Showed a good range of passing with one ball arrowed towards Jesse Lingard catching the eye in the first half.
Emerging as a leader in Mourinho's rearguard this season.
CB: Phil Jones – 7
Some solid tackles and smart interceptions as he deputised for the injured Victor Lindelof.
A positive return to action and will have (temporarily) silenced the doubters.
LB: Luke Shaw – 6
Tried to get forward as much as possible with United initially looking adventurous.
Earned one of the biggest cheers of the night when he hurried along Jean-Pierre Nsame as the visiting striker ambled off the field with less than 10 minutes remaining.
CM: Fred – 7
One of the better performers on the night, buzzing around with intent as United laboured in an uninspiring display.
CM: Nemanja Matic – 5
Went in the book early on but did grow into the game with some forceful shielding in front of the back four.
Still too pedestrian on the ball but did his job with minimum fuss.

RAM: Jesse Lingard – 7
Showed some of his usual clever touches and demonstrated good link-up play with Rashford.
Unlucky to be sacrificed as Mourinho shuffled his pack
CAM: Marouane Fellaini – 3
Deployed in an advanced role and given freedom to roam, but was obviously not the right man for the job.
Cumbersome in possession and wasteful when handed a rare sight of goal, blazing over when it looked easier to score.
His last-gasp finish (which appeared to involve handling the ball) will be remembered, but the Belgian did not have the best of nights before his timely intervention.
LAM: Anthony Martial – 3
Been on fire in recent weeks but looked badly off the pace here, struggling to influence the match positively.
Spurned several good chances and ran down too many blind alleys when team-mates were better placed.
ST: Marcus Rashford – 6
Very bright and energetic but lacking a clinical edge in front of goal with several poor attempts including a skied one-on-one early on.
SUB: Paul Pogba (on for Fred, 63 mins) – 5
Struggled to get going with United looking disjointed after Fred's departure.
SUB: Romelu Lukaku (on for Lingard, 63 mins) – 5
Found himself usurped by Fellaini late on as United went long.
SUB: Juan Mata (on for Valencia, 71 mins) – 6
Looked to make an instant impact and tried to get United playing with tempo.
