Man Utd news: Paul Scholes singled out these two United stars after Juventus loss
MANCHESTER UNITED defenders Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof have been criticised for their roles in Juventus’ winning goal on Tuesday.
Mourinho praises Juventus following Champions League loss
Smalling and Lindelof played together at the back for Manchester United in the Champions League Group H clash at Old Trafford.
Juventus won the game 1-0 thanks to a first-half strike from forward Paulo Dybala.
After some good work from Cristiano Ronaldo down the right-hand side, the former United star whipped in a dangerous low cross.
Smalling was unable to clear as he blocked Juan Cuadrado’s initial shot at goal.
Can Lindelof get across there? I think he can. He has to see that, that’s the danger
The ball then fell kindly to Dybala to stroke home from close range.
United legend Paul Scholes was working as a pundit for BT Sport on the game.
Scholes admits Juventus were the better side on the night and had no complaints at the result.
But he believes the goal could have been avoided with better defending from Lindelof and Smalling.
“They played decent football tonight, they were by far the best team,” Scholes said of Juventus.
“Can Lindelof get across there? I think he can.
“He has to see that, that’s the danger.
“I think Chris Smalling goes with his wrong foot, I think he should go with his left foot and take everything out.
“Don’t even think about the risk of the ball falling where it does, he needs to take the full thing out and the goal doesn’t happen.
“But give credit to Dybala, centre-forward, sniffing a goal out and he’s finished it well.”
United will look to return to winning ways on Sunday when they welcome Everton to Old Trafford in the Premier League (4pm).
Everton have won their last three games under Marco Silva in the league.
