Liverpool news: Robbie Fowler disagrees with Graeme Souness' claim about current Reds team
LIVERPOOL’s squad is NOT the best it has been since the Reds last won the league title in 1990, according to legendary striker Robbie Fowler.
Liverpool are second favourites with the bookies to finish top of the Premier League for the first time.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are one of three teams in the league yet to taste defeat this season after eight games, along with Manchester City and Chelsea.
With the attacking threat of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, and the defence being strengthened with the arrivals of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, many believe it is Liverpool’s best chance to win the title in 28 years.
Former midfielder and manager Graeme Souness says it is the best Liverpool squad he has seen since then.
Until the actual team does win that trophy, or a trophy, then I think the argument is bigger and better
But Fowler disagrees with his former boss, claiming they must win silverware to be given that label.
“No (I don’t agree with Souness),” he told Sky Sports News.
“I shouldn’t really argue with Graeme Souness to be honest.
“But I think if they win stuff, yes. I don’t think you could argue with it then.
“But until the actual team does win that trophy, or a trophy, then I think the argument is bigger and better.”
Despite Liverpool’s fine start to the season, Fowler believes Klopp is not totally satisfied with his team.
“Look, I don’t think they’re playing as well as what we as fans and I think Jurgen the manager wants,” he said.
“But what you can’t argue with is the points on the board.
“Joint top, I think at the start of the season you would have taken that all day long.
“They’re unbeaten in the league so I think it’s been great.
“It’s a long, long way to go so I don’t think anyone is getting too carried away.
“But he’s certainly got the players fired up and ready for the challenge.”
