Liverpool news: Frank de Boer makes Daniel Sturridge injury claim
LIVERPOOL striker Daniel Sturridge needs one of Jurgen Klopp’s star forwards to get injured for him to get a prolonged period in the team.
That is according to former Ajax, Barcelona and Netherlands defender Frank de Boer.
Daniel Sturridge has been in good form for Liverpool so far this season, scoring four goals in seven appearances.
He has scored on both of his starts this term and netted a stunning late equaliser as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday.
Sturridge has had constant injury problems in recent years at Anfield and has lost his place in the side to Roberto Firmino.
For him he has to be lucky for somebody to get injured
Firmino has nailed down a starting spot with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah either side of him.
De Boer, who was working as a pundit for Sky Sports, was asked if Sturridge will be knocking on the door of manager Jurgen Klopp this week, asking for a start against Manchester City on Sunday.
But the Dutchman claimed Sturridge knows he is only a back-up at the moment and will have to wait for his opportunity.
“No, no, 100 per cent not,” De Boer said.
“If you see last season what the three strikers did, he knows his place.
“For him he has to be lucky for somebody to get injured.
“Then he comes in and he can show the manager, not only one game or 20 minutes or 10 minutes, that he can continue for four, five, six games.
“Then he can make it really difficult from my point of view.
“Or somebody has to be really out of form.
“But normally those three up front, there’s no doubt about it who it’s going to be.”
Liverpool return to Champions League action on Wednesday when they visit Napoli (8pm).
They won their first group game two weeks ago, beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-2, with Sturridge scoring one.
