Liverpool news: Southampton backed to WIN at Anfield if they do one thing
SOUTHAMPTON can end Liverpool’s 100 per cent start to the season and win at Anfield this afternoon.
That is the opinion of former Chelsea and Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino.
However, Cascarino says Southampton will have to “defend for their lives” against a rampant Liverpool side.
Southampton have just five points from their opening five Premier League games of the season.
Mark Hughes’ side threw away a 2-0 at home to Brighton on Monday to draw 2-2.
Southampton will have to defend for their lives, McCarthy in goal will have to be brilliant
Liverpool have won all five of their league matches, conceding just two goals, and come into the game off the back of a dramatic 3-2 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are overwhelming favourites to make it six wins from six and go top of the table, at least until Chelsea play tomorrow.
But Cascarino says upsets are possible, as we saw on Wednesday when Lyon won at Manchester City in the Champions League.
However, he admits it will be a tough task for Southampton today.
“Yeah they will be (favourites), because how can you see anything different?," he said on talkSPORT.
“Do we get incredible upsets? We saw one in midweek with Lyon going to Man City. They do happen.
“Southampton will have to defend for their lives, (Alex) McCarthy in goal will have to be brilliant.
“He’s been superb by the way for Southampton at the start of this season.
“If they do that and defend brilliantly, any team has got a chance.
“But that’s a big if.”
Southampton are without Danny Ings for the visit to Merseyside.
The striker is on loan from Liverpool and cannot play against his parent club.
Fabinho is still waiting to make his Premier League debut after coming on late against PSG on Tuesday.
