Liverpool news: James Milner outperforming Naby Keita after England snub - EXCLUSIVE
LIVERPOOL star James Milner is a “genius” and revelling from the benefits of not playing international football with England.
That is the opinion of former QPR and Blackpool manager Ian Holloway.
Milner retired from England duty in 2016 after playing just three minutes at Euro 2016, as the Three Lions crashed out to Iceland.
Gareth Southgate did attempt to persuade the midfielder to make a return but the 32-year-old has remained out of contention.
And it has been to Liverpool’s advantage, especially this term, where he has arguably been their player of the season so far.
The bloke is a genius because he can play anywhere on the pitch
Milner has kept out big money signings Naby Keita and Fabinho.
And on Tuesday he showed why as he delivered an excellent display, scoring from the penalty spot, as Liverpool beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 in Champions League at Anfield.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has backed Milner to continue playing until he’s 38 due to his dedication and work ethic.
And Holloway told Express Sport, Milner is getting better with age.
“He’s had an England free summer,” said Holloway, a pundit for the EFL on Quest highlights, also on QuestOD.
“I think he’s watched that World Cup thinking: ‘I may not get picked for that but I can still help my team’.
“The bloke is a genius because he can play anywhere on the pitch.
“And it proves when you get older, you can get better. Just because you are getting older doesn’t mean you are going to get worse.
Liverpool star James Milner scores blinder in training
“A lot of rich owners want value for money but senior ones give you value for money in a different way.
“They are invaluable in the dressing room. James trains like a trojan. He’s so professional.
“Keeping Keita out as well, how well must he be playing.”
