STUMBLING BLOCK: Sepp Blatter is set for collision course
FIFA president Sepp Blatter, backed by UEFA chief Michel Platini, is set to make some stringent demands of England’s top league if the country is to host the greatest show on earth – starting with the introduction of his pet project, the 6+5 quota system.
Blatter’s proposal would see a minimum of six home-grown players in Premier League sides, plus five foreigners. The League balks at that idea, dismissing it as illegal and unworkable, and so there will have to be some serious horse-trading if England are to get the backing they require.
Blatter has major influence on FIFA’s 24-man executive committee – and England need to secure 13 votes. There are nine bidding countries, with Spain and Russia England’s main rivals in Europe.
