Tottenham news: Harry Redknapp slams Mauricio Pochettino ahead of Inter Milan clash
TOTTENHAM manager Mauricio Pochettino is WRONG to write off his team’s chances of winning major honours this season, claims Harry Redknapp.
Tottenham have lost their last two games in the Premier League against Watford and Liverpool.
Following the 2-1 defeat at home to Liverpool on Saturday, Mauricio Pochettino claimed his side are not realistic contenders for any competition this season.
“We are not realistic contenders in any single competition, that is my view,” Pochettino said.
“If we show the same face as against Watford, it’s impossible to be a contender.
You can’t write your season off in the league already after two defeats surely. There’s a long way to go yet
“If we show the face (we showed against) Liverpool, it will be so difficult.”
But ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan today (5.55pm), Redknapp has criticised Pochettino’s comments.
Redknapp understands it will be difficult to win the Premier League but says a cup competition should not be ruled out at this stage of the season.
“I don’t know his methods behind what he’s saying there,” Redknapp told talkSPORT.
“Of course they’re contenders. You can’t tell me they haven’t got a great chance in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup to start with.
“There’s two cup competitions there they’ve got a big chance to win.
“The Premier League, okay Man City and Liverpool are red-hot favourites, I fancy one of them two.
“But you can’t write your season off in the league already after two defeats surely. There’s a long way to go yet.
“After that Man United game everyone thought they have got a great chance this year.
“I thought they were fantastic at Old Trafford.”
Tottenham are without captain Hugo Lloris and midfielder Dele Alli for the trip to Milan due to injury.
Defenders Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier have also been left in London.
Pochettino said the reason for their absence was "technical".
