Man Utd news: Marcus Rashford warned - ‘He could become the next Danny Welbeck’
MANCHESTER UNITED star Marcus Rashford could become the next Danny Welbeck if he continues to play out of position.
That is the verdict of Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
Carragher hit the headlines last week, claiming Rashford may need to leave Manchester United to fulfil his potential as a centre-forward.
United boss Jose Mourinho appeared to criticise Carragher at a press conference last week, pointing out the number of games and minutes Rashford has played under him.
However, Carragher tonight reiterated his view that Rashford has not played enough as a central striker, revealing he has only done so 12 times in the Premier League since Mourinho has been at the club.
I like Danny Welbeck as a player and I don't want to come across disrespectful, but Marcus Rashford does not want to become Danny Welbeck
The pundit went on to look at a list of young strikers who have failed to nail down a spot at a top Premier League club in the past.
That brought him onto Welbeck, who came through the academy at United and joined Arsenal in 2014.
Welbeck has not been a regular starter at either club and especially through the middle.
And Carragher is worried Rashford could head in that direction if things do not change soon.
“I want to come to Danny Welbeck,” Carragher said.
“I like Danny Welbeck as a player and I don't want to come across disrespectful, but Marcus Rashford does not want to become Danny Welbeck.
“What I mean by that is this: he came through United as a forward, and then he was used on the left and the right, and was delighted to get the minutes.
“Then he ends up becoming a squad player, never nailing down a centre-forward position.
“He moves to Arsenal, the same thing has happened, he's still a squad player.
“And it's the same for England.
"That's what you don't want.”
Welbeck has made two substitute appearances for Arsenal this season, scoring one goal.
