‘I’ll drive him straight to Brussels!’ - Romelu Lukaku cheeky retirement plan proposed
VINCENT KOMPANY has joked that he will pick up Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and take him straight to Brussels to persuade him to come out of retirement.
Lukaku scored twice in Belgium’s 3-0 victory over Iceland on Tuesday in their Nations League clash.
Although Lukaku’s form has been questionable at times for Manchester United this term, he has been prolific on the international stage and his double for Roberto Martinez’s men took his tally to 43 goals in 77 appearances.
Last month, Lukaku dropped a clear hint that he could look to hang up his boots for his country after the European Championships in 2020.
While he would be just 27 if he follows through with his promise, Lukaku could disappoint some of his compatriots.
Young players sometimes say things that they later regret. We all laughed at it
And Kompany believes he will be able to persuade Lukaku to change his mind.
“I can hardly imagine that I’m going to have a lot of trouble convincing him to go even further,” Kompany said when asked about Lukaku’s retirement plans.
“Young players sometimes say things that they later regret. We all laughed at it.
“When Romme stops, I will pick him up at his home in Manchester and I will take him to Brussels. He does not live too far from me.”
Thibaut Courtois doesn’t envisage Lukaku making true on his promise, unless of course Belgium triumph at the Euros.
He said: “Do I believe him? Not really, but you never know, of course.
“An attacker like Lukaku works very hard and has little rest. That weighs in time.
“But if we were to win the European Championship, I can not imagine that he will stop. It would be very unfortunate.”
Lukaku was outstanding in Burnley clash says Hislop
Lukaku has struck three times in the Premier League this term, scoring once every 98 minutes.
He has however missed four ‘big chances’, more than any other striker in England’s top division.
United return to action on Saturday away to Watford (5.30pm).
