England player ratings vs Spain: Man Utd ace shines – but Liverpool stars fail to deliver
ENGLAND were well-beaten by Spain at Wembley despite a flicker of brilliance from Manchester United team-mates in the opening minutes.
England fell to a 2-1 defeat against Spain in their first game at Wembley since returning from the 2018 World Cup.
The Three Lions got off to a flyer in their debut UEFA Nations League clash as Marcus Rashford slipped home an early opener for the hosts.
Luke Shaw's terrific low pass marked an excellent start to the game for the Manchester United left-back, though he left on a stretcher in the second half with a head injury.
Goals from Saul Niguez and Rodrigo clawed Spain back into the game, while Danny Welbeck's last-gasp equaliser was ruled out for a foul on David De Gea.
Take a look below to reveal which players impressed and failed to deliver on a tough night for Gareth Southgate and his England stars.
England player ratings vs Spain - UEFA Nations League
Jordan Pickford – 6: Couldn’t do too much about either goal, despite getting a hand to the first.
Joe Gomez – 5: Given a tough time against Rodrigo – looked overwhelmed. A young player Southgate should persist with though.
John Stones – 6: Didn’t get too much wrong, but could have been more aggressive.
MOTD: Harry Maguire discusses Man United transfer rumours
Harry Maguire – 7: Performed his role well. Won everything in the air against diminutive attackers.
Kieran Trippier – 7: Had a good battle with Marcos Alonso on his side of the field. More good crosses, just failed to find clear targets.
Jordan Henderson – 5: Could’ve done more about Spain’s second – shouldn’t have allowed to ball to travel so far. Still looks rusty in 2018/19.
Luke Shaw – 6: Terrific ball for the opener will be a massive confidence boost, but dived in too quickly during the build-up to the equaliser. Hopefully his injury isn't as serious as it appeared.
Jesse Lingard – 5: Subdued from the ace who excited the nation in Russia. Provided little threat.
Dele Alli – 6: Still yet to produce his best form in an England shirt. Tidy, but failed to provide a major spark.
Marcus Rashford – 7: Sharp for the opening goal and was denied a second by club team-mate David De Gea.
Harry Kane – 5: Very quiet. Barely had a sight of goal all evening, with scarce service provided and little won or himself.
