Man Utd vs Tottenham: Do these pictures PROVE Spurs should have had a penalty?
PHIL JONES was lucky not to give away a penalty during Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham.
Manchester United are taking on Tottenham at Old Trafford as they look to recover from their shock defeat to Brighton last week.
And while Jose Mourinho’s side nearly opened the scoring after a matter of seconds thanks to Fred, however the midfielder’s shot went wide.
But the main talking point of the first half was Tottenham’s disallowed penalty claim.
On the half-hour mark, Jones was tussling for the ball with Tottenham playmaker Lucas Moura inside the box.
However, the Manchester United defender bundled over Moura in his attempt to get the ball.
Tottenham players were quick to appeal for the spot-kick but their protests were quickly waved away by referee Craig Pawson.
Former Liverpool ace and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Tottenham should have been awarded a penalty for Jones’ clumsy foul.
“Yes (Spurs should have had a penalty) it was,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“We’ll just see the point of impact there. Moura gets his leg across, Phil Jones comes, a typical Phil Jones tackle really. I think the telling thing now is yes, it’s a foul, but just watch Phil Jones (his reaction).”
Even ex-Manchester United man Gary Neville admitted Jones was lucky not to concede the spot kick.
“That is a big old leg of Phil Jones’ clattering against a player at full speed. It’s definitely a penalty,” he said.
But while Tottenham didn’t get their wish for a penalty in the first half, it didn’t take long for the visitors to break the deadlock after the break.
Kieran Trippier whipped in a corner from the box and Harry Kane did brilliantly to get above Jones to head the ball home.
And just minutes later, Moura also got his name onto the scoresheet as the playmaker quickly doubled Tottenham’s lead.
