Arsenal news: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Gunners failed to beat Man City
ARSENAL must work on playing out from the back after falling foul to Manchester City's high-press, claims former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas.
Jermaine Jenas reveals why Arsenal lost to Manchester City
The Gunners lost to the Premier League champions on Sunday as they were brushed aside by Pep Guardiola's side 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Unai Emery was taking charge of his first game for Arsenal after replacing Arsene Wenger in May.
And there was a noticeable difference between the Spaniard's style of play and that seen from his predecessor in recent years.
Arsenal were actively trying to play the ball out from the back, while also pressing Manchester City high up the pitch.
I saw too many occasions where there wasn't enough options
But Jenas believes the north London outfit have work to do on to master Emery's new style of play.
"I like what Unai Emery is trying to achieve," he said on Match of the Day 2.
"But I saw too many occasions where there wasn't enough options.
"Whether it's the centre-half who's got on the ball and he's going 'well my centre midfielder is marked so where is Henrik Mkhitaryan or Mesut Ozil.'
"They need to have at least more than one option.
"When Man City do it, you know if you squeeze in on them, you can almost bet that Ederson is just going to drop it into Aguero's chest and they're away anyway."
Emery admitted after the game he wasn't entirely happy with his side's first competitive fixture.
However, the former PSG boss sounded confident he could get the best out of his new players.
"The first half we didn't play like we wanted," he told reporters.
Unai Emery on Man City loss: We need to improve the team
"We spoke at half-time about taking more responsibility for the second half, to do a little more.
“We wanted to build with the ball and break their lines.
"I think in the second half we played more like we want."
Arsenal face the tough task of playing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next time, while City welcome relegation candidates Huddersfield to the Etihad.
